My stomach growled loudly, so I made a mental note to stop off at the bakery on the way home. The floor was emptying of people as the light outside the window darkened, giving way to the moonrise.

Yet again, I had been forced to work overtime to sort out Robert’s crazy schedule. Despite me only having worked at Fright for a couple of weeks, he hadn’t underestimated my ability to adapt quickly and had gone home hours before, leaving me with a long list of tasks to complete before lock-up. Here’s a tip: don’t say that you’re a fast-learning night owl during your interview.

“Oh hey, you’re still here?”

I jumped. I hadn’t heard Aiden come out of his office. Then again, he was actually standing in front of Robert’s office. His eyes twinkled as he chuckled under his breath at my reaction.

“I’m just finishing up—you?” I clocked his fingers leaving Robert’s embellished door handle. What had he been doing in there?

Aiden shrugged. “Me too.”

He had his laptop bag slung over his shoulder and jacket folded across his forearm. I felt myself blush as he smiled down at me, completely forgetting what I had just been thinking. His arms were bulging slightly through his shirt as if he’d worked out the day before, and he’d undone his top button, allowing his tie to hang loosely around his neck. He’d also forgotten to take his glasses off, so he very much looked like the sexiest nerd I’d ever laid eyes on.

I felt my cheeks heat up again and looked at my watch as a distraction, hissing a breath through my teeth. “Ah damn, I forgot all the buses have been rerouted to First for the Prime Minister’s Speech … I’ll need to call a taxi.”

I reached across the table to my phone, and Aiden stepped a little closer, coming to stand by my desk.

“Oh, you’re … you’re not going?” he asked quietly.

I looked up at him curiously, sucking the inside of my cheek. I chose my words carefully: “No. Politics doesn’t really … interest me.”

“Yeah …” He let his bag fall from his shoulder, catching it swiftly in one hand to lower it to the floor as he leaned on the desk nearest mine. “To be honest, I never really got what the big deal was about that guy. I know he’s a friend of Rob’s, but …” He rubbed the back of his neck and laughed softly.

I looked up at him. This sudden shyness was uncharacteristic, but cute. I could understand where it came from, though. It wasn’t often you heard of people expressing dislike of the good old Prime Minister of Galia. His election won him 95 per cent of the votes, just like all the prime ministers thirty years before him. Pretty weird, now that I thought about it.

“You know, I agree. I always found him kind of creepy,” I said.

Aiden immediately relaxed as he realised we were on the same page. “It’s the corkscrew moustache, right? I
